When I wrote my book on the Edmund Fitzgerald, I struggled with how to arrange the Fitz’s foundering with all my comparison sinkings. The arrangement finally solved itself–I’d get to a point in the story where some decision was made and wonder if it was correct (divert to narrative of contradiction example, then return to the Fitz timeline)–AFTER I started writing the book.
